TitlePeer assisted video-on-demand for set-top based IP network
Case NumberM07-102
AbstractLead Inventor: Henning Schulzrinne, Ph.D.

Problem or Unmet Need:
Streaming videos and movies over the Internet are increasingly becoming popular. Devices such as set-top boxes allow streaming videos to the home television directly from the Internet. The provider of these videos has to maintain central servers and allocate large bandwidth for streaming thousands of videos simultaneously. This incurs a significant economic cost for the provider.

Details of the Invention:
The technology proposes a novel algorithm to allow set-top boxes to stream videos from other set-boxes in a peer-to-peer (p2p) fashion. It takes advantage of the fact that set-top boxes have large storage capacity and are connected to the Internet. Streaming videos in a peer-to-peer fashion reduces load on the central server.

Applications:
¥ Set-top boxes
¥ Streaming of user-generated content in a p2p fashion

Advantages:
¥ Cost sensitive streaming of movies over the Internet
¥ Reduction of load on the content provider
