Title
Compounds which prevent neuronal cell death & uses thereof
Case Number
535
Abstract
Name of the inventor: Carol M. Troy MD, PhD
A method of inhibiting cell death and for alleviating symptoms of a neurodegenerative disorder in a subject is described.
The method involves inhibition of enzyme activity on a substrate in a cell by contacting the enzyme with a peptide fragment derived from an active site of the enzyme under conditions that the fragment is capable of binding to the substrate of the enzyme. This prevents neuronal cell death and alleviates the symptoms of a neurogenerative disorder.
The method provides for an alternate approach to the problem of enzyme inhibition by utilizing a portion of the active site of enzyme itself, instead of using the classical approach that blocks the active site of the enzyme.
